The Iowa State Capitol was built between 1871 and 1886 and stands as a beautiful example of the prevailing architectural styles of the 19th century. The architectural focal point of the capitol is its beautiful dome, built from steel and brick and gilded with gold. The capitol is located near the center of downtown, just south of the Mercy Capital Hospital.
